“They saw their injured country's woe;
The flaming town, the wasted field;
Then rushed to meet the insulting foe;
They took the spear, - but left the shield.”
The real meaning of Memorial Day has been co-opted by shopping sprees and cookouts and other fun times. Not a fitting thing to do because those who served on the battlefield have dealt with an alternate reality so that we who didn't serve -- or have close family members who served -- didn't have to interrupt our much nicer lives.
