“They saw their injured country's woe;
The flaming town, the wasted field;
Then rushed to meet the insulting foe;
They took the spear, - but left the shield.”

Hearing Old Lyrics Clearly for the Very First Time...
Second class year (77-78) at the Academy I had a roommate from Connecticut. He was a deckie, crew team nut, who played Jackson Brown and/or Dan Folgelberg records every night when he went to bed.
When I heard this track the other day, I thought that for the first time I really heard was Brown was signing about.
Funny, I could sing along with song, but I never understood the words... 'til now.

Ah, gotta love Jackson Browne.
His version was definitely less contemplative...
Yes, I used to listen to the Jackson Brown version... but I never really heard and/or thought about the lyrics until I heard this version.
Funny that.
One can now imagines other variations upon this song's theme... or perhaps...
