from the above video:
And did the detainees, or did you know when you were going to be seeing your families again, or did they keep you in prison long, or how long was your reeducation camp time?Well that is a good question, and that make me say that prisons are not concentration reeducation camp. In prison, detainees are kept there knowing when they are to be released. In concentration reeducation camp, you're kept without knowing when you'll be released. And the condition for your release is to make progress, and to show that you have worked hard, labored hard. That means that you are kind of held hostage to that condition for being released. And that makes many fellow detainees turn out to be informants for the cadre of the camp and also that makes the fellow detainees become very competitive to show that they are much better than their competitor fellow detainee, and that makes the atmosphere in the concentration camp very, very miserable. That's why I say that in the concentration reeducation camp, the basic and most horrible thing is the mental torture. So you you can kind of compare it to for instance putting a carrot in front of a horse's face to make sure that he keeps running?Yes, but that is a very benign comparison because in the reeducation camp, you are conceived of like a horse, you know having a carrot in front of you, you never reach, but also because of that because of the striving for survival and because of all of the pressures that, not only you try hard, but also you try to excel and to compete with your fellow detainees, that makes life miserable.

Yawn.
Traditional society.
You need to work hard. You need to show piety and strive for involvement. To be THE SAME as that other guy.
And... there is NO release... if no, then where??? ;-P Into Heaven? Into AfterLife??? ;-P
And you behavior... is of that freed slaves... that was crying to their old masters -- to take em back. ;-P
But... too bad. You are free now. And can be only master of your own. ;-P
I'm not going back. I did my time.
But scars remain...
Indeed. You can't get over some lies.
I dunno that myself, too young, but elder like to say what to do to that youngsters... they say.
That called -- mentorship. ;-)
I grew up in the military, where rank was displayed for all to see, and the lower ranks followed orders. I discovered in civilian life, that things didn't operate that way. That rank meant nothing and that no privileges were extended with it... only $, and the ability to "distribute" that money was reserved only for those at the very top. In other words, I was deprived of any ability to reward performance to my subordinates in any substantially meaningful or meritocratic way. My position was merely "formal", and therefore ultimately "meaningless".
The funny thing is, I declined a military promotion on the principal that i wasn't qualified to receive it, and was given an honourable discharge for my conscientiousness. The world of my youth was turned completely upside down.
Well... that is totally opposite to how it in startups. ;-)
I wouldn't be so sure.
Well... you can read from first hands. From podcasts. Even meet actual people.

Well, anyway, he closer to you, then for me from here. :-/
Well... I not sure, that people obsessed with such proto-AI... would be of any help...
That's like asking Lenat... about anything. ;-P
It would probably be more practical to train some AI on you ovo problem then recruit a million engineers/scientists/futurists.
Pft!
Such a faith in techno-magic. :-)
And well... why that should be "million engineers/scientists/futurists"????
...and not ten million?
If there is such amount... in all of the World? ;-P
I don't know...a Max 136,233 in 2019 x 40 years = 5,449,320 = US alone... so whole world? Maybe.
Good engineering hunch! :-)
But... what amount of em grok some NEW techs? ;-)
Understand Science? Have experience with programming?
Interested in history and biology?

Yawn.
In my department... there was NO people interested in Particles Physics... even though faculty was exactly about that.
It's a Big $$$ field. Unless you're a Co-I at CERN or a Big University or National Lab, you're pretty much SOL (sh*t outta Luck). Not much progress can be made experimentally in the absence of $$$ for particle accelerators or access to them.

That's... because we stupidly await for it to be done SAME way as previously. ;-P
But... doing same thing, again and again, with same negative results -- isn't that... idiotic? ;-)
We really are just a clever monkeys??? Or we not? ;-)

This is a common failure mode in AI-futurism which I may write about later; it consists of the leap from "I don't know how to solve this" to "I'll imagine throwing something really big at it". Something huge enough that, when you imagine it, that imagination creates a feeling of impressiveness strong enough to be commensurable with the problem. (There's a fellow currently on the AI list who goes around saying that AI will cost a quadrillion dollars—we can't get AI without spending a quadrillion dollars, but we could get AI at any time by spending a quadrillion dollars.) This, in turn, lets you imagine that you know how to solve AI, without trying to fill the obviously-impossible demand that you understand intelligence.

And I realized that the word "impossible" had two usages:
1) Mathematical proof of impossibility conditional on specified axioms;
2) "I can't see any way to do that."
Needless to say, all my own uses of the word "impossible" had been of the second type.
Any time you don't understand a domain, many problems in that domain will seem impossible...

As far as I know (very limited knowledge, really) psychiatric problems -- they are inherent.
Means... if you fell into that -- need to admit asylum, there was something in your psyche before it.
Again... I am not specialist in it, of any kind.
Some probably are inherent. But the vast majority are acquired "environmentally". Like IQ. Half heredity. Have environmental.

It must not have been a very effective ad campaign. Maybe I'd have had to hear the "jingle" behind it, or see the "mascot" or logo. Music is much more memorable than most visuals... at least to me.
