“They saw their injured country's woe;
The flaming town, the wasted field;
Then rushed to meet the insulting foe;
They took the spear, - but left the shield.”
The poem from which the immortal line was drawn is by Kipling. It is called "The Betrothed," and was inspired by a Breach of Promise suit brought in 1885 based on the woman’s demand that her betrothed must choose between her and his cigars.

I find it eminently amusing. -- especially in light of the regrettable ascendancy of The Militant Bluestocking, and her ever increasingly obnoxious descendants' late twentieth-century domination of the culture.

ReplyDeleteStay tuned, Thersites, more of the estimable Mr. K appears at my blog on the morrow, albeit a more sober, reflective example of his work.

Reuben Reuben, I've been thinking
___ what a grand world this would be
If the men were all transported

Rachel, Rachel, I've been thinking
___ men would have a merry time
If the girls were all transported
___ for the way they think's a crime.
Reuben, Reuben, stop your teasing
___ If you've any love for me
I was only just a-foolin'
___ as, of course, I thought you'd see.
Rachel, Rachel, cease your wailing
__ Then come here and marry me
We must have a dozen children
__ so we may live happily.
