Shallow depth of field and bokeh are both over used, I think. I watched the first two seasons of The Handmaid's Tale, and the dof began to feel suffocating...and irritating. But I do appreciate the intense close ups on the main character. Her face is so expressive.
The narrator in the video compared our world to Gilead by saying something to the effect of...our "vision" today is limited by our choices, we keep our heads down and focus only on what we choose, hardly noticing the world around us. CREEPY!
I've never seen an episode, but I found the concept compelling. Like the backgrounds in Children of Men that depict this insane world in which people were trying to live mundane lives... until the background crashes into the foregroundand the characters are finally forced to finally deal with it.
