James Joyce once famously said that if it took him seventeen years to write Finnegans Wake, then a reader should take seventeen years to read it. In his usual prophetic way, he turned out to be exactly right
Sifting through the accreted layers
“We can express our feelings regarding the world around us either by poetic or by descriptive means... I prefer to express myself metaphorically. Let me stress: metaphorically, not symbolically. A symbol contains within itself a definite meaning, certain intellectual formula, while metaphor is an image. An image possessing the same distinguishing features as the world it represents. An image — as opposed to a symbol — is indefinite in meaning. One cannot speak of the infinite world by applying tools that are definite and finite. We can analyse the formula that constitutes a symbol, while metaphor is a being-within-itself, it’s a monomial. It falls apart at any attempt of touching it."

I thought of Lem and Solaris when I listened to this... a material and accretive form of language... like different cells in the body learning to communicate... intelligence "finding the way/ means".
Interpreting the "motion in the ocean" so to speak, but without the necessary proximity of direct contact... and material fusion.
...anthropcentrism... thinking intelligent communication always can be understood as crossing a gap.... between spaceship and planet (via a medium like RF), and not direct connection... hard-wired but open contact through which physical materials like proteins are exchanged.
...and where their particular fragrances can linger and accrete upon one another.
