No, no need, that was all PR. I worked for Chris when he ran the Earth Observing System Program (EOS) at NASA. That was (3) $1b satellites (Terra/ Aqua/ Aura) and a Ground/Observer System. I worked on Instruments, the 2nd bus (Aura) and the GIS ground system. He went on to becoming Chief Engineer for NASA at HQ, and eventually Acting NASA Administrator, as well as GSFC Center Director.

Well. For at least, about that myth of high ground.

It's enough to be higher for an inch.

Like in ww dogfights -- it was enough to have dozen more km of speed.

Or yet previously... just somewhat better guns.

Because, it is quite fun to have "we have machine guns... and they not"

But in real world, and not strategic fantasies... ehm, multiverse, if you are too owerwhelming -- it makes your adversary to choose methods against which you are not that strong (that same british battleships against german uboats)

Giving it round around.

All my ideation have a big problem. But, of a natural kind.

It's freakingly impossible to predict real world engineering landscape.

Like take for example overly detailed and live depiction of submarine by Jule Vern.
He even proposed seamingly possible source of energy for it.
So?
What if there really was easily excavated mineral under water, as straightforward source of electricity?
Would Vern-like "Nautilus" be possible?

Well, but he added some morw incredulous details... to spice up his story? or that just level of self-deception he had?
That some tech breakthroughs can come from unusual places...

so, what is reality, and what is fantasy???
while we do not stand before a board with drafts... with a mere pencil trembling in our hand?
moment when even that trembling... even unst#ady-drawn line can be a source of insight...

There... is no source of infornation I know, that woukd reveal -- what kind of magic happens then...

to build-up my breadcrumbing on it.

Cause, we thinking in 3d

What needed to launch probe into space?
It need to have propultion system, isn,t it?
And then, control and navigation system.
And obviously a communication system, as previous ones would be useless without it.

And that all built each time from scratch. Which means skyrocketing costs each time.

And that... because modern wonders like GPS and Internet... are not available in space.
Yawn.

But what if they'd do?
What if we'd have space depots here and there. And wholethrough communication system...

then, probes can be just a delivered package... like things called "nanosatelites" today.

Well, that same problem with everything maritime.
Well, our ships for the ocean can be much bigger then spaceships. And carry a lot of stuff.

But.

With oceanic GPS, so to say, it would be omni-presence and even ability to build everything in-place...

Dunno... maybe you feel that I trying to dismiss your efforts, with my previous... ehm, outburst? :-\

While I just trying to find a place for it inside bigger picture. As part of a whole puzzle.

Like... you have experience of working in big organizations. Much bigger than anything I did.
And you have first hand understanding -- how it consist if many-many different people. And each one have own concerns.
Like hydravlics engineer, his liquids to not leak and be spilled everywhere.)
While electricity engineer brawling against electrocutting hazard.
But same time, there is a lawyer, which naggung everyone so that all needed papers woukd be done right.
Isn't it?

And that'll be a big problem in itself. Problem that rendering whole system non-working, if there'd be a discord in-between everybody involved...

-FJ the Dangerous and Extreme MAGA Jew said...

That's the point isn't it? Transcendance is needed. Emergence isn't enough. Ever hear of RW Emerson and the Transcendentalist Movement? Thoreau was a disciple, and was known for his "Civil Disobedience" (going outside systems to effect change). Flatland's author was trying to demonstrate the principle...

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (1884) by Rev. Edwin A. Abbott is a satirical novella, written by "A Square," that uses two-dimensional geometry to explore themes of transcendence, social hierarchy, and the limitation of perspective. The story centers on a character experiencing, then struggling to conceptualize, higher dimensional spaces beyond their own.

Transcendence and Dimensionality in Flatland

The Narrative Arc: The protagonist, A Square, lives in a 2D world and is confined by its rigid social, gender, and spatial constraints.

The Experience of Transcendence: The Square is visited by a 3D Sphere, which represents a higher, unseen reality. This interaction acts as a metaphor for spiritual or intellectual enlightenment.
The Limitation of Perception: The square initially cannot conceive of "up" or "down"—a third dimension—just as humans may struggle to comprehend a fourth.

The Message: The book argues that reality is not limited to what can be immediately perceived, encouraging the audience to accept the existence of higher truths and realities, including spiritual or religious ones.

Contextual Themes

Social Critique: The 2D world of triangles and circles is a direct satire of the rigid class structure and attitudes toward women in Victorian Britain.

Intellectual & Spiritual Growth: The story emphasizes that resistance to new ideas and higher perspectives is a limiting, often ignorant, state.

The Author: Edwin Abbott was a theologian and educator, which informs the book's deep interest in morality, faith, and questioning established, narrow perspectives.

the "world of forms"

Plato's Theory of Forms posits that the physical world is an imperfect reflection of a higher, unchanging realm of perfect, abstract essences or "Forms". While traditional biology focuses on material mechanisms, modern interpretations apply this to suggest that biological structures (morphogenesis) are guided by a "Platonic space" of pre-existing patterns.

Key Aspects of the Theory in a Biological Context:

Ideal Patterns: The "forms" are perfect, eternal, and non-physical templates (e.g., the perfect form of a leaf).
Imperfect Participation: Biological organisms are considered imperfect, temporary representations of these perfect Forms.

Platonic Space in Morphogenesis: Researchers (e.g., Dr. Michael Levin) explore a "Platonic space" as a source for biological forms, suggesting that development (morphogenesis) aims at specific, structured patterns beyond just genetic programming.

Aristotelian View vs. Platonic View: While Plato saw forms as separate from matter, Aristotle argued that forms are inherently embedded within biological objects. Most biologists adopt an Aristotelian perspective, considering form as inseparable from the organism’s structure rather than an external entity.

Evolutionary Perspective: Some perspectives suggest that forms are not fixed, but act as "evolutionary companions" or attractors that guide the potential of living systems.

This approach allows for exploring biological shapes and behavior as solutions to problems within a structured "morphospace," often navigating complex situations by choosing between different, pre-existing structural possibilities.

Sun Tzu's famous quote regarding knowledge of the enemy, from The Art of War, emphasizes that victory depends on understanding both sides: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles". It highlights that intelligence gathering—knowing strengths, weaknesses, and strategies—is crucial for success.

Key Interpretations of the Quote:

The Full Quote: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you will succumb in every battle".

Self-Awareness First: True understanding begins with an honest assessment of your own strengths, weaknesses, resources, and limitations.

Application: Beyond war, this principle applies to business, negotiation, and personal development by reducing uncertainty and enabling informed decision-making.

The Goal: The ultimate aim is to win by preparing, making strategy, and, if possible, subduing the enemy without fighting.

The core message is that victory is achieved through preparation, awareness, and strategy rather than just force or luck.

Key Examples and Concepts:

The Nomad: Deleuze and Guattari contrast the sedentary, structured "state" with nomads of the steppes who escape, disrupt, and bring change, acting as a direct line of flight, according to Swarthmore College.

Counterculture Movement: Leaving mainstream society (e.g., establishing hippy communities or Drop City in Colorado) rather than directly fighting it, as noted by Philosophy for Change.

Technological Shift: The creation of personal computers (e.g., the Apple I) or the Internet, allowing new forms of communication and economic structures to escape traditional corporate, state-centered structures, as described in this article from Philosophy for Change.

The "Crack-Up": A personal, emotional, or professional breaking point (like in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Crack-Up) where a person loses their old identity to become "radically new," according to a study on Deleuze Reading Fitzgerald.

Art and Literature: Creative acts that bypass established meanings, producing new perceptions and sensations.

A line of flight isn't just fleeing; it is "leaking" or "vanishing" from a strict structure to create something new, according to Wikipedia.

New technologies (like the PC) create new lines of flight.

"The Medium is the Message" (1964): McLuhan argued that the true "message" of any technology is the change in scale, pace, or pattern it introduces into human affairs. The content is merely the "juicy piece of meat" used to distract the mind.

Media as Extensions of Man: Technologies are extensions of ourselves: the wheel extends our feet, the phone extends our voice, the computer extends our brain, and electronic media extends our central nervous system.

The Global Village: He anticipated that electronic media (and later the internet) would collapse time and space, creating a highly interconnected, interdependent world that acts like a village.

Technological Determinism: McLuhan believed technology dictates human interaction and social structures, moving through stages: Tribal (oral), Literate (print), and Electronic.

Hot vs. Cool Media:

Hot Media: High-definition, low-participation (e.g., film, radio, print).

Cool Media: Low-definition, high-participation/interactivity (e.g., TV, internet, telephone).

Technological Shift Example: The Gutenberg printing press transformed society by shifting the culture from a communal, oral experience to a private, visual, and analytical one, paving the way for the Reformation.

McLuhan was famously critical of the technological idiot who believes it is only "how a medium is used that counts," ignoring the inherent, transformative impact of the technology itself.

How old are you? I had my "psychic break" in 2001, right after GWB got elected (thanks to the former bloggers at George magazine and the Baltimore Sun website). I was 44 (midlife crisis). It's the point where you are forced to evaluate your own personal accomplishments and decide what you need to change.

I got hit with a mind bullet that completely deterritorialized my former identity.

But not freed you from "need" to have one...

Perfidious Ruskies! ;)

Nope. Just been given a proper awareness. Before 2001 I was a very loyal American. Now I "know myself" (and my country) a little more realistically.

You know my weakness (consciously).
But still cannot grasp the difference (unconsciously).
Simple truth that I cannot relate myself with USA.
And as one whose life began under one state myth(of USSR), but then swiftly was dismantled before my very eyes...
it,s hard for me to relate myself to any such myth.

Dunno how to explain. In your terms.
Maybe, that I caught "mind bullet" of 10x caliber than you. And quite earlier.

So. For my today thing I can relate myself -- it's Humanity as a whole, maybe.

That's might be the reason why I so fond of Lem...
he have come through similar kind experience, that forged his brilliant mind.

Well... without it, we'd be just a crowd of nomads (and maybe even cannibals)
yawn.

Yes, I grew up in a bubble. I was an Air Force brat in a foreign country trying to understand why they wanted us "gringos" to "go home". I spent much of my youth trying to grok it. Eventually I put it down to the fact that they simply didn't understand our "good wishes" for them. it wasn't until much later that I learned how "not altruistic" our foreign motives were. And worse, I learned that my government wasn't interested in protecting the domestic interests of "average Americans" either. THAT was the "mind bullet" that came in 2001.

So I started out a humanist, and was reduced to becoming a plain old nationalist. And as a nationalist, I have no interest in humanism any more as it pertains to events outside of the borders of the USA. WWII turned out to be pure propaganda... used to brainwash kids into believing in our innate goodness as a country, and our duty to combat communism (later - after 1989 - spread "democracy"). All that was a lie. All global events after 1989 were used to expand American hegemony, NOT lift up new or former allies. And in late March of 2001, the veil was finally lifted.

Ever gone from being to true believer fundamentalist into a disappointed skeptic, overnight? That was my psychic break. The paranoia became disabling. I spent 2 weeks in a mental hospital. The Secret Service interviewed my and took my picture, believing that I might be a threat to the new president. What they didn't know was at that point I desperately wanted to sell my soul to the new administration, and work for them. I desperately wanted to "believe" in goodness again.

I... did reveal it to you? Or that is my memory playing with me?

That I got realization of my mortality, that I would die, and WILL die. At 5-6 year age.

What mind breaks can be more disastrous than that???

\\ it wasn't until much later that I learned how "not altruistic" our foreign motives were.

That... does not matter even.
Inertia.
THEY... would not like being uplifted... even if you'd that out of purest angelic motives.
Inertia.

I was asking about Strugatsky's
Cause their "It's hard to be god" is about it alone.
