The Idealist

An idealist is one who, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup.

Mencken is clearly wrong here. In the situation he describes the idealist would be one who insists that enjoying the scent of a beautiful rose is more life enhancing than filling one's belly with cabbage soup.
