Going Rogue

Gippy Grewal returns with a track which has pleased many of his fans as well as critics. The song ‘Zaalam’ focuses on the period of the 1990’s in Punjab when state terror was wreaked upon the Sikhs and Sikh youth were tortured, raped and killed by the Hindustani armed forces. In this video Gippy Grewal plays the role of a soldier’s son who wishes to fall into his father’s footsteps but instead enlists as a Soldier of the Sikh Sangarsh.

I wish i could translate the song for you, but i am not very good with Punjabi. However, the title "zaalam" means "the tyrant".

Thanks for the context!

Is Sikh independence much of an issue in today's India?

I was doing my daily browsing of new YouTube videos as when I ran across this one... which didn't really require much translation in order to be 'understood'.

...not anymore. It was when i was young, in the 80s. But since then they have been quite assimilated into the Indian mainstream, a fact for which much credit goes to the Sikhs themselves, a very industrious race (that is one of the narratives, anyway.) Kashmir, however, is still a thorn in the flesh for Indian state.

You might like to watch the movie "Haider" which is an adaptation of Hamlet and is set in insurgency-hit Kashmir. I quite recommend it. Very good, indeed.
