Free Thinking Rule Girls?

‘Rule Girls’ are heterosexual women who follow precise rules as to how they let themselves be seduced (accept a date only if you are asked at least three days in advance etc). Although the rules correspond to customs which used to regulate the behaviour of old-fashioned women actively pursued by old-fashioned men, the Rule Girls phenomenon does not involve a return to conservative values: women now freely choose their own rules – an instance of the ‘reflexivisation’ of everyday customs in today’s ‘risk society’. According to the risk society theory of Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck and others, we no longer live our lives in compliance with Nature or Tradition; there is no symbolic order or code of accepted fictions (what Lacan calls the ‘Big Other’) to guide us in our social behaviour. All our impulses, from sexual orientation to ethnic belonging, are more and more often experienced as matters of choice. Things which once seemed self-evident – how to feed and educate a child, how to proceed in sexual seduction, how and what to eat, how to relax and amuse oneself – have now been ‘colonised’ by reflexivity, and are experienced as something to be learned and decided on.

The quickest, surest, safest, sanest route to "FREEDOM" relies on slavish devotion to SELF-DISCIPLINE.

Lose that, and we revert to a feral state faster than you can say, Saul Alinsky.

That's right. LIFE is a PARADOX.

The wounded surgeon plies the steel
That quesions the distempered part;
Beneath the bleeding hands we feel
The sharp compassion of the healer's art
Resolving the enigma of the fever chart.

Our only health is the disease
If we obey the dying nurse
Whose constant care is not to please
But to remind us of our, and Adam's curse,
And that, to be restored, our sickness must grow worse.

The whole earth is our hospital
Endowed by the ruined millionaire,
Wherein, if we do well, we shall
Die of the absolute paternal care
That will not leave us, but prevents us everywhere.

The chill ascends from feet to knees,
The fever sings in mental wires.
If to be warmed, then I must freeze
And quake in frigid purgatorial fires
Of which the flame is roses, and the smoke is briars.

The dripping blood our only drink,
The bloody flesh our only food:
In spite of which we like to think
That we are sound, substantial flesh and blood-
Again, in spite of that, we call this Friday good.

________ ABOUT T.S. E:IOT'S FOUR QUARTETS _________

[WIKINOTE: Four Quartets is a set of four poems written by T. S. Eliot that were published individually over a six-year period. The first, Burnt Norton, was written and published with a collection of his early works following the production of Eliot's play Murder in the Cathedral. After a few years, Eliot composed the other three poems, East Coker, The Dry Salvages, and Little Gidding, which were written during World War II and the air-raids on Great Britain. The poems were not collected until Harcourt-Brace, Eliot's New York publisher, printed them together in 1943. Before then were first published as a series in Great Britain in 1941 to 1942 towards the end of Eliot's poetic career.

Four Quartets are four interlinked meditations with the common theme being man's relationship with time, the universe, and the divine. In describing his understanding of the divine within the poems, Eliot blends his Anglo-Catholicism with mystical, philosophical and poetic works from both Eastern and Western religious and cultural traditions, with references to the Bhagavad-Gita and the Pre-Socratics as well as St. John of the Cross and Julian of Norwich.]

____________ PERSONAL ADDENDUM ____________

WIKI went on to say that ORWELL had a negative reaction to Eliot's work, even though most considered it Eliot's last magnum opus, because Orwell didn't approve of the work's overt "religiosity."

Atheism renders even great geniuses opaque in all too many instances. It also many account for the utter joylessness, gloom, complete lack of humor, and agonizing sense of desperation and impending suffocation that characterize most of Orwell's work.

It may sound quaint today, but I firmly believe, –– if we have reason to hope at all ––, our hope lies in the Presence of Jesus Christ, who lives in all who love Him.

PS: Remember this, and you can't possibly go wrong:

THE GOLDEN RULE is the ONLY RULE.

It renders every tedious volume in every law library in the world and every long-winded, hairsplitting Oral Argument before every Court in the land redundant and obsolete.

________ RESURRECTION ________

Cold He lay behind the heavy stone,
Hidden there with broken hands and feet.
Ruthless powers crushed His flesh and bone.
It looked to be the ultimate defeat.
Sadly, in the dawn Saint Mary’s three
Trudged toward the tomb wherein He lay.
Instead of death, an angel helped them see,
Startled, that the stone was rolled away!
A risen Jesus stood! He still drew breath!
Radiance around Him warmed the air.
In banks of lilies sweet we now see death
Stripped of terror. Life, eternal, fair,
Enjoins us all to claim His victory.
Naught could stop us save our vanity.

HAPPY EASTER!

Let us acclaim God's Ultimate Victory for ourselves by retaining and increasing our faith, and never giving way to anger, bitterness and cynicism.

A weekend wedding... followed by a busy workweek, I'm afraid. Be back soon. :)

FreeThinke said...

Ah yes, WORK!

It is, indeed, the curse of the drinking class. ;-)

Hope you had fun at the wedding?

I've reached the point where I cry at weddings, and laugh my fool head off at funerals.

I loved to PLAY weddings. I took the job very seriously, and always had a great time giving a well-rehearsed organ recital before the bride arrived to march down the aisle. No one paid me the slightest attention, I'm sure, but I know that in all probability I was the one who enjoyed those weddings more than anyone else present. Life is full of ironies, ain't it?

AFter forty years of honorable, devoted, wholehearted service, however, enough was enough.

I got very tired of trying to combat the "Why Can't You Play Elvis Songs, and Get Some Guitars and Drums Up There?" Contingent.

"Hootnannies for Him" and "Cocktails with Christ" are frankly sacrelegious, and most in our eviscerated, hopelessly ignoranticized culture are angrily unaware of their miserable plight.

Waltzing to the Scaffold or playing a jig after the trap door has been sprung would delight the witnesses immeasurably, I'm sure.

A culture may be properly evaluated only through the professed ideals towards which it strives.

Fun? What's that? My wife was far too stressed trying to keep the catering people on top of things for "fun". But I did have some good conversations with some of the guests attending.

Oh, I see. I didn't know you were IN CHARGE. ever much fun in that.
