“They saw their injured country's woe;
The flaming town, the wasted field;
Then rushed to meet the insulting foe;
They took the spear, - but left the shield.”
―Philip Freneau

And by a prudent flight and cunning save A life which valour could not, from the grave. A better buckler I can soon regain, But who can get another life again?

Someday there'll be horseless carriage that fly ... But who knows when tha Age of Miracles will come to be So, meanwhile, darling, make miracle and marry me.
~ Frank Loesser, "Make a Miracle" from Where's Charley? (1948)
This musical version of the classic farce Charley's Aunt with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser was set c. 1900 on a college campus. I was only six when I was taken to see it, but have never forgotten how much fun it was to see Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz) sing and dance his way through Once in Love with Amy and Make a Miracle. I tried to find the lyrics to MaM, because they are so in tune with Tesla's futuristic fantasies, but like so many good things from the past they seem to have disappeared into th;e harsh realities of the present.
YouTube has a LOT, but it still doesn't have EVERYTHING –– not by a long shot.

Someday a small white pill will feed a family,
But meanwhile let's have steak and kidney pie,
And meanwhile, darling make a miracle and marry me.
