Fermi Paradox - The Myelin Filter? Life May be Common... but Intelligence?

from Wiki:
Myelin is considered a defining characteristic of the jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes), though axons are ensheathed by a type of cell, called glial cells, in invertebrates.[16][17] These glial wraps are quite different from vertebrate compact myelin, formed, as indicated above, by concentric wrapping of the myelinating cell process multiple times around the axon. Myelin was first described in 1854 by Rudolf Virchow,[18] although it was over a century later, following the development of electron microscopy, that its glial cell origin and its ultrastructure became apparent.[19]

In vertebrates, not all axons are myelinated. For example, in the PNS, a large proportion of axons are unmyelinated. Instead, they are ensheathed by non-myelinating Schwann cells known as Remak SCs and arranged in Remak bundles.[20] In the CNS, non-myelinated axons (or intermittently myelinated axons, meaning axons with long non-myelinated regions between myelinated segments) intermingle with myelinated ones and are entwined, at least partially, by the processes of another type of glial cell the astrocyte

Functionally equivalent myelin-like sheaths are found in several invertebrate taxa, including oligochaete annelids, and crustacean taxa such as penaeids, palaemonids, and calanoids. These myelin-like sheaths share several structural features with the sheaths found in vertebrates including multiplicity of membranes, condensation of membrane, and nodes.[16] However, the nodes in vertebrates are annular; i.e. they encircle the axon. In contrast, nodes found in the sheaths of invertebrates are either annular or fenestrated; i.e. they are restricted to "spots". The fastest recorded conduction speed (across both vertebrates and invertebrates) is found in the ensheathed axons of the Kuruma shrimp, an invertebrate,[16] ranging between 90 and 200 m/s[17] (cf. 100–120 m/s for the fastest myelinated vertebrate axon).

Yeah, well the tapes for the NC Mill's were usually programmed by my friend Danny on his Radio Shack TRS-80 and placed onto a tape cassette. I then "ran them" (played the tape) on the Cincinnati milacron NC Mill. So to me, the Turing Machine (TRS-80) and NC Mill were two different things. Old School, I know. Although at the shipyard, we were even more primative as we used to lay out the cut-steel patterns for plasma cutting on wood strips with white tape and pencil lines (for the cutter's automatic optical scanner to follow) at 1/4 scale on the floor of the sail loft and then take them to the Structural Shop for cutting the steel shapes (the optical scanner followed the pencil lines on the white tape)... so there was no Turing Machine in-the-mfg-loop.

Much like Arthur Schopenhaer, the only "new horizons" I'm headed for aren't towards any "undiscovered countries/ futures" in this life. As he stated, "life is a process of preparing one's-self for death".

BS.

Especially in our days and age.

That is just our utter fear of changes.

How do I know??? Is it just shallow taunt???

Naaaah.

I know it for sure -- because I feeling that fear MYSELF.

But... able to look into its ugly face. ;-P

And show my tongue to it. ;-PPP

Machines... of type we know NOW.

But... our own bodies -- is just machines.

We just NOT mastered technology they made with... yet.

So what?

It just mean that "live longer" can be just YET ONE of such changes...

\\We reboot it every day, until the last one.

Naaah.

It real-time. And without downtimes.

And that's whole problem.

But... we able to run no-downtime systems today.

And even transfer processes "on the fly". Suspend and snapshot. And whatever we want.

Only... that is possible with some other tech.

NOT one which inside our body (as we not mastered it, yet).

But... by analogy, that is obviously possible.

It's just... we need to became "much smarter"... -)

Except you're not allowed to violate USCG or the Insurance body rules (ABS/Loyds) when building it. And so "innovation" is often suppressed.

Evolution's a b*tch, for certain. Plato, "Cratylus"

SOCRATES: Nor can we reasonably say, Cratylus, that there is knowledge at all, if everything is in a state of transition and there is nothing abiding; for knowledge too cannot continue to be knowledge unless continuing always to abide and exist. But if the very nature of knowledge changes, at the time when the change occurs there will be no knowledge; and if the transition is always going on, there will always be no knowledge, and, according to this view, there will be no one to know and nothing to be known: but if that which knows and that which is known exists ever, and the beautiful and the good and every other thing also exist, then I do not think that they can resemble a process or flux, as we were just now supposing. Whether there is this eternal nature in things, or whether the truth is what Heracleitus and his followers and many others say, is a question hard to determine; and no man of sense will like to put himself or the education of his mind in the power of names: neither will he so far trust names or the givers of names as to be confident in any knowledge which condemns himself and other existences to an unhealthy state of unreality; he will not believe that all things leak like a pot, or imagine that the world is a man who has a running at the nose. This may be true, Cratylus, but is also very likely to be untrue; and therefore I would not have you be too easily persuaded of it. Reflect well and like a man, and do not easily accept such a doctrine; for you are young and of an age to learn. And when you have found the truth, come and tell me.

CRATYLUS: I will do as you say, though I can assure you, Socrates, that I have been considering the matter already, and the result of a great deal of trouble and consideration is that I incline to Heracleitus.

SOCRATES: Then, another day, my friend, when you come back, you shall give me a lesson; but at present, go into the country, as you are intending, and Hermogenes shall set you on your way.

CRATYLUS: Very good, Socrates; I hope, however, that you will continue to think about these things yourself.
