The flaming town, the wasted field;
Then rushed to meet the insulting foe;
They took the spear, - but left the shield.”

Ego gratification. Supported by dualistic notions. The "I Am" distractions created by western societies focus on the primary of individualistic pursuits at the expense of the whole. Amplified by America's belief in rugged individualism.
Following The Middle Way is a considerably more effective method to achieve peace within and lasting happiness.
Unfortunately America is moving to greater amplification of division and hate. The likely results? Complete dissolution of cohesiveness and the beginning of total societal chaos. The American Fuhrer Trump and MAGA's specialty.
Like you're "attached" to some unachievable vision of "the whole".
