I actually started with Children. I was on a ship and there was a copy in the Officer's lounge. I read Dune after getting back to the States... Messiah, Chronicles later (but not memorable)

That's why I prefer to observe ALL sci-fi.

Well... it need "physical picture". Or "thought experiment", as Einstein have taught us.
But most experiments... are not that ground-breaking.
They just usual process of "sowing wheat from chaff".
Or extraction of rare metal from raw material.

I have (very little, so no biggy) experience... of observing that... from within. ;-)
That a satellite can capture a rare event (ie - magnetic reconnection) by flying in a certain orbit, for a certain period. That we can invent and build an instrument (or suite of instruments) that can capture and measure that event from Level 1 Science requirements.
You've seen the "aurora borealis". That's an "effect" of magnetic reconnection.
