by Wang Huning
Amazon blurb:
In 1988, a young Chinese man traveled to the United States on an academic research trip. During his six month stay he visited 30 cities and 20 universities throughout the country. Upon the conclusion of his trip, he authored a book called America versus America, which described the contradictions of the American political and socio-economic system, as well as a critique of capitalism and democracy.
That young man was Wang Huning, who is currently a member of the CCP's Politburo Standing Committee (China's top decision-making body) and the first-ranked secretary of the CCP's Secretariat. He has been called the "Grey Eminence" of the CCP. As such, Wang is believed to be the chief ideologue of the Chinese Communist Party and the principal conductor behind the official political ideologies of three paramount leaders beginning with Jiang Zemin in the 1990s. 30 years later Wang is still helping to formulate Chinese domestic and foreign policy at the highest levels.
This book is an attempt by a scholar to explain the reasons behind the success of the United States in the 20th century, as well as offer a critical take on the various structural problems that were already facing the US in the 1990s. It offers a brief outlook of why the US is potentially heading toward a decline. Although America Against America was first published in 1991, more than 30 years ago, it is still widely read amongst high level Chinese political figures and bureaucrats. Any serious student of US-China relations will benefit greatly from reading this book that remains at the core of Chinese strategic thinking vis-à-vis the United States.

Nope. Chinese "policy lessons".
Then that book of notes of Mao... would be more representative. ;-P

Naaah. The 3 Represents illustrates the "difference" between Mao's China, and the China of today derived from Wang's 'America v. America'.

Yep, big JJR fan here. The essayists likely prefer babies in swaddling clothes to Emile.

Ahhh, wisdom. As in wisdom:justice::temperance:courage.
"Potential decline" of the United States is a gross understatement. We are in a deep, and some would say, an un-recoverable spiral.
Well... most darkest hour, is before dawn... they say...
@ Mustang - "Progressives" don't see it as a "decline"... they perceive it as "progress" towards "social justice". And yes, we both see it for what it is, as a "decline".
...a rejection of classical liberalism.
@Q... an alienated desire.
...pursuing its' objet petit 'a even though ne'er the twain shall meet.

Homeostasis -- that is process that going BOTH ways. ;-)
Like falling out your old hair for new ones grown in place.
Another word... like a grass... not like a tree. ;-)
Still this one is better for me. ;-P

It's probably just a passing nausea. The kind I get every time I hear 60's "folk-music".

Well... I do that specualtion on the base of one certain mr.bin. And its cohort.
And well... I told you about that "teacher of logic".
And some other... through my lifetime.
So... yes... fear of death, makes people behave like crackpots too... in defying Reality. (yet one Lem's text, about it too)

Well... that exact example, of "of acta non verba"... from those whose work -- to talk.
Like... once spotted it on Internet -- story how Jobs was not just demanding, but persuasive too -- with explaining to his engineers/programmers... not only WHAT he wants of em... but also -- why. (and that spell... seems like still working, from some other flick)
One more unlucky russian. ;-P
Fear is the mind killer. So it pays to create an ironic distance from it, at times, rather than a fetishistic disavowal of it. Obscene marching chants help. ;)
Still... better learn to look into its ugly face...
That's what makes a Musselman. If you stare into the abyss too hard, the abyss stares back. Meden agan.
Pft!
That's only if be over-weighted with lots of superstitions about it... I think.
As I said, I internalized that fear very early in my life.
And. Without help from any kind of "shamans", "philosophers", "clergy" and etc... "those who know better", which instill all kinds of false promises and exaggerated scarecrows around it... to have their control over minds...
And as such... I poorly understand motives of other, especially so-called "spiritual" people.

Maybe. Remember all Saddam Husein Iraqi Guard during Desert Storm sitting in their bunkers during the B-52 bombing surrendering to attack helicopters? Shock & Awe. Trench soldiers in WWI - "Shell Shock"? Vietnam PTSD? Not all can stare into the abyss, and NOT be affected. The Musselmen? They'd stared into it for years...

Yeah, I was raised "Lutheran" but was always agnostic at heart. Later, I'd attend, but not perform all the 'rituals' (ie- Communion). Finally (after reading a lot of Plato) I just decided that I would be a Deist instead of an Atheist. Put, as St. John of the Cross said, a little love in the world. So I'm no longer a Christian. My G_d created the Universe, but stays the 'f OUT of it. I guess saying "I dunno" wasn't enough. I've taken a stand alongside "caritas".

Like just did watched Catastrophe (1997) -- plane crash, with vigilante taking justice in own hands (with blowing everthing with EMP), and government clerk... with personal involvment...
I think I know a reason of your "Uvalde syndrome" -- Hollywood tout you "that's... work for heros... and you are not hero, so scram!". ;-P
You're right, they don't make many tragedies anymore.
btw - Near or far only works for cockroaches.
