Isn't this tangentially related to how some military rifle rounds will tumble through a target (i.e. cause massive trauma) because a new axis is introduced when the smaller end hits and the greater mass of the bigger end spins (deflects its inertia) around it?

...it's a shame that the aerodynamics from friction in air come into play.
