Teaching and Nothingness, "The Disappearance of Adulthood"
Back in 1994, the Sociologist Neil Postman made the radical claim that childhood was ‘disappearing’. His explanation? That there was previously what he called an ‘information hierarchy’ between adults and children. In previous epochs, adults always had more access to knowledge and information than children, and therefore they held a certain authority over children, however with the rise in media and technology, children could now access just as much information as adults, and could potentially view harmful ‘adult’ material, that would have been impossible in the past. Clearly Postman’s claim has taken on new relevance in the age of social media and smartphones. It is not unusual in contemporary society for children have a better understanding of certain topics than their parents. The internet has destroyed the information hierarchy, and therefore destroyed childhood.
I want to take this argument further, and suggest that in Late Capitalism, adulthood is also disappearing. I want to argue that whilst capitalist claims to emphasis individuality and uniqueness, what we are seeing around us is perpetual teenagers, unable to attain the maturity of adulthood that generations before us were able to reach.
The first reason we see adulthood disappearing is that the traditional markers of adulthood are simply not available to any born after around the 1980s. Traditional markers, such as owning a home, financial independence, marriage and children, are less available today than ever. In the UK, house prices have risen massively, whilst wages have not and will not, for lots of young people in Britain, home ownership is not even a possibly, not even a dream in the future. Particularly in the middle classes, we have seen a rise in ‘boomerang families’ — families where the children leave for a short period (usually to go to university) then are forced to return when the economic realities hit them. Birth rates continue to fall as well, with many couples unable to face the costs of bringing children into the world. Government policy, such as cutting child benefit and pathetic maternity leave payments clearly contribute to this. Being an adult is just too expensive in the 21st century.
A second, related point is, that another marker of adulthood is having ‘finished’ your education or qualifications. Whilst children are often seen as incomplete beings, who are in the process of becoming an adult, adults are seen culturally as complete beings, fully ready to participate in the world. This is no longer the case. Adults, in their professional and personal lives, are constantly asked what they are doing to ‘improve themselves’. This hysterical question is a question that can never be answered, which again keeps the individual as a perpetual teenager and never allows them the wholeness of adulthood. For example, as a teacher I have undergone years of education, culminating in my degree, followed by an extensive teacher training degree and surveillance program, and yet every year I am asked what ‘continued professional development’ I will be doing. I am not allowed to stop, I must be constantly improving, otherwise I am failing as a teacher. Byung-Chul Han claims that we have moved to an ‘achievement society’ where people must be constantly moving forward in a positive way, where the model verb can, has replaced should. What CAN I be doing to improve myself as a teacher is the hysterical question I am asked every year. The idea of an authoritative adult is disappearing, as we all CAN continue to develop.
If the traditional markers of adulthood are unattainable to us, how are we supposed to live? Of course Late Capitalism does have an answer for us. We are to stay perpetual teenagers, constantly trying to find ourselves, in a confusing world. The existential dread that used to stereo-typically hit most 15 year olds, is no longer a phase, but a lifestyle. As adults we our encouraged to engage in baseless consumption, quick fixes of fun, and endless enjoyment. As Slavoj Zizek has stated, the demand from society is that we must enjoy. We see this all around us; bars that also have games rooms and colouring books for adults being two examples. We are called upon to consume and enjoy ourselves. Therapists talk of patients complaining that they are ‘not living life to the full’. Late capitalism requires us to be in this perpetually teenage mode, as this keeps us consuming. A hyperactive teenager will be more likely to spend than a contemplative adult.
Ultimately it is Late Capitalism’s emphasis on short term consumption, rather than long term ideals that is restricting people from achieving adulthood. It is also the overly-individualistic notion of self-improvement, both personally and professionally, that undermines an individual’s opportunities to become contemplative and mature adults. We are all teenagers now.
A State of Permanent Liminality (or for as long as this current post-Modern Capitalist economic "event" continues)
Music [...] is the genre that is by its very nature the most ephemeral. Music will always die. It exists only as long as the vibrations continue. Music is not found in structures; it does not depend on words or on obeying the rules. In a practical sense, Music does not seem necessary for human existence.-Edie Turner, "The Anthropology of Collective Joy" (2011)
Collective joy... victory in a sporting event, watching a concert spectacle, the applause erupting at the end of the theatric spectacle... the Oscar "afterparty".

Neotenia.
Yawn.
We no longer grow up. We remain helpless "consumers" our entire lives.

Neoteny also called juvenilization, is the delaying or slowing of the physiological, or somatic, development of an organism, typically an animal.
The goal in "listening to music" isn't to reach the song's end. The end is merely a part of music's "structure". Neoteny therefore relates to a problem or solution to a problem of structure.
Juveniles no longer "graduate" from college. They no longer get married. The rituals that represent the "end of the song" of adolescence are no longer present. Juveniles now remain adolescents "forever".
The posted thread after this one explains it better.
Whatever.
I tryed to explain it to you -- that WE, homo sapience -- absolutely visibly appeared as neoteny form of our predecessors -- apes.
And you trying to whine to me that we need to grow more hair and bigger fangs...
why you asking ME???
I am NOT Evolution.
Have no play in that game. Well, no power or influence... except, through you know what.
Well, then we're reverting to neoteny, as the social rituals which allowed modern man to further develop from our early human ancestors are disappearing in the 21st century. Atavism strikes back!
Dunno.
And you will not explain in more details...
Our social structure is disintegrating. The "rituals" separating hierarchies disappearing. Hence, we remain suspended in a limbic state of perpetual social adolescence. The internet has created a rhyzome, and we have become lost within it, thralls to social influencers and celebrities, all lacking "charisma".

Hah. So much for "creative destruction".

The point is that it is an uncontrolled demolition serving no purpose but that of the randomness of evolution. Its' just an unplanned "Tragedy of the Commons" (Garrett Hardin), over-grazing before the population collapse/ catastrophe. The senseless destruction of an ecosystem where "fitness" and "the fittest" gets redefined. A new paradigm (of scarcity) emerges that regresses towards a new "mean".

Substituting the autopoeisis of capital for the autopoeisis of mankind cannot be beneficial for the "life" of mankind.

Riddles again. :-/

Only the ones that the algorithms let through the gate. I feel like Kafka "Before the Law".
BS.
And where's Invisible Hand?
That got slapped away on the first day of a Government-Industry cooperative agreement.
Pft!
You dunno what you are talking about.
Go enlighten yourself about such a phony soviet organization -- Gosplan (Government Planning)
They were able to destroy the USSR's economy. You don't think if given the power, that they wouldn't do so with ours?
Pile of scraps cannot be destroyed.
Because it is already pile of junk.
About power...
Isn't alive coyote... is better then dead lion? ;-)
Always. Persistence is always the goal of life.
...and piles of scrap can be melted down and recast into more useful objects.
Yeah... but that'd need lots of energy...
So they decided to sell their energy sources to the West instead... which paying to em with modern version of glass bids. ;-P

Well... that's the whole reason I do not try to start to work on my tech in a garage... incidentally.
My economic point, exactly. Less efficiency. Tax incentivised. Small is more anti-fragile.

Creative destruction? ;)
Okay, I choose to throw our tax incentives for corporations and tax them MORE, instead.
Naah.
With taxes. As that is social construct.
There is always a way to workaround or play with system.
In Physics... want 1 N (newton) of force MEANS you need to give up something, that will be EQUAL to that 1 N... this or that way, ALLOWED by Laws of Nature (that bitch, I gave her spitting image to you lately ;-)).
And... to engineers it even WORSE... there is additional TAX in a form of Coefficient of Efficiency
You should go work for the Pentagon. "Hard Kill... Hard Kill... HARD Kill!"
'Ef "hard kill". Be British. "SOFT kill". Taxes.
...and no, the problem of "engineers" is same as non-recurring "set-up costs". production "efficiencies" are born from the Division of Labour that exclude non-recurring costs.
Like Shanzai... no "Intellectual Property" royalties to pay. Knock-offs. Let someone else pay the non-recurring development costs.
Hah...

Like today liliPut declared that it will spend more on "development of AI".

Pain is probably a cell "stressor"... and avoiding it generate a certain "surplus enjoyment" much as Marx postulated that the division of labour generates "surplus value" (avoiding the non-recurring components involved with serial product processing by setting up once only for a group of products processed in parallel).

Race to decode the Human Genome? Race to "cure" HIV/ Cancer/ MDS/ etc.
Hesiod, "Works and Days"
THE TWO STRIFES
[11] So, after all, there was not one kind of Strife alone, but all over the earth there are two. As for the one, a man would praise her when he came to understand her; but the other is blameworthy: and they are wholly different in nature. For one fosters evil war and battle, being cruel: her no man loves; but perforce, through the will of the deathless gods, men pay harsh Strife her honour due. But the other is the elder daughter of dark Night, and the son of Cronos who sits above and dwells in the aether, set her in the roots of the earth: and she is far kinder to men. She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbour, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbour vies with is neighbour as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men. And potter is angry with potter, and craftsman with craftsman, and beggar is jealous of beggar, and minstrel of minstrel.
\\Adam Smith wasn't a sh*t-eater.

But he is fossil himself.
\\Race to decode the Human Genome? Race to "cure" HIV/ Cancer/ MDS/ etc.
